  Foreword of the Mayor
Dear honourable friends,

In 1997 with the discovery of the ancient Roman military diploma bearing the first inscription of the antic name of Brod "MARSVNNIA" from the year 71 A.D., we got yet another confirmation that our town has an extremely long history and rich tradition. The name Brod was mentioned for the first time in 1244 in the charter of the Croatian - Hungarian King Bela the Fourth.

Situated along the river Sava on the cross-road of the most important traffic lines, Brod always had significant strategic importance - from the medieval fortress to its defensive role in the Military Region on the borderline of the Austrian and Turkish empire. For this purpose in 1715 Austria built huge border fortress in Brod, the largest in this part of Europe.

With abolishment of the Military Region in 1871 Brod achieved the town status and became the centre of the large area on both banks the Sava river. The town developed with Central European architecture, palaces of the wealthy citiziens and industrialists in the style of historicism and secession.

Due to its strategic position Slavonski Brod suffered heavily in all wars. Croatian spirit and commitment for the independent and democratic Croatia were paid with hard 7 months of destruction during which 182 citizens were killed (27 of them were children), 591 were wounded, and approximately 500 Croatian soldiers, coming from the former Brod municipality, lost their lives defending Croatia.

Brod played an extremely human role during acceptance of almost one whole new town of refugees originating from Bosnian Posavina and the exiles from Eastern Slavonia. Nowadays, Slavonski Brod has got approximately 70 thousand inhabitants. It is the seat of the Brodsko-posavska county. Special attention has been paid to reconstruction and development of the urban area, arrangement of squares, traffic lines, facades, buildings and objects. Brod gave to Croatia and the whole world great and famous men in the field of culture, politics and science.
One of the main objectives of the new state was return of national characteristics, cultural, historical and moral values, renewal of the identity through presentation of its cultural heritage and values distinctive for the Croatian national being and European origin of our town.
Slavonski Brod is beautiful and prosperous town, attractive for different investments, living and work of young capable people willing to contribute to its development and connectivity with other parts of Croatia. The inhabitants of Brod love their town, they will stay with it forever, for better and worse. We want it to flourish and develop with its familiar appearance, wide and warm soul of the Croatian, Slavonian people.
We invite you, our dear friends, into our beautiful town. In such a way you are going to become more familiar with it and fall in love with it.

Welcome!
With kind regards,
Sincerely yours,
Mayor Dr Mirko Duspara
